Dr. Frances
Colón -a native of San Juan, Puerto Rico- was recently
appointed Principal Oboe of the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra replacing
one of her former teachers, Prof. David Bourns, who retired this
past June after 38 years in that position. Dr. Colón began her oboe studies
under Rafael Martinez
at the Free School of Music in San Juan, graduated from the Puerto
Rico Conservatory of Music, and went on to study with Mrs. Janet
Mascaro, Richard Killmer and Dr. Nancy Ambrose King, under whose
tutelage she obtained her Doctoral Degree in May of 2000. Currently
Professor of Oboe at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, Dr. Colón is also
a member of Camerata Caribe, resident faculty chamber music ensemble of the
Conservatory. It is worthy of note that Dr. Frances Colón's predecessors as
principal oboists in the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra include the
likes of David Bourns, Laila Storch, James Caldwell and Harry Shulman.
